Fans of the traditional “wake and bake” will soon have an even more efficient way to achieve that morning buzz. San Diego-based company Brewbudz recently introduced plans to offer single-serve coffee pods infused with cannabinoids. The pods will work with Keurig and other one-cup coffee machines.

“It’s an opportunity to bring together two different rituals in life,” BrewBudz Vice President Jeffry Paul said in a recent interview.”Drinking coffee or tea is something that’s part of your every day…. There’s also a ritual for marijuana, whether it’s medicinal or recreational.”

One cup of “West Coast Roast” will contain 10 milligrams of THC for recreational users, and up to 50 milligrams of CBD for medical patients. The pods will retail for around $7 apiece and are 100 percent compostable. There will also be infused tea and hot cocoa pods for those who prefer less caffeine.

BrewBudz is linking the caffeinated tea and coffee with sativa-dominant cannabis and using indica strains for chamomile and nighttime teas. Sativa is known for giving people more of an energetic “head high” while indica tends to offer a body buzz that keeps users on the couch. The pods are flower-based edibles, meaning the entire cannabis plant is used. This is a relatively innovative idea in the marijuana industry, since the majority of edibles use THC or CBD extracts.

“We aren’t using an extract or an oil,” Paul explained. “In the pod is a mixture [of the cannabis plant] and either the coffee or tea or cocoa product.”

The company is due to launch sales in Nevada and Colorado in January and plans to expand to Washington, Oregon, California and Arizona by March. It is hoped that President-elect Donald Trump’s administration will not derail this plans – his choice for attorney general, Jeff Sessions, is against marijuana legalization. Currently, nearly one-quarter of US citizens live where cannabis is legal.

Ryan and the team at BrewBudz are optimistic about the future of their company and the cannabis industry as a whole. Their dedication to sustainability and offering innovative delivery methods of cannabinoids is yet another example of how rapidly the industry is expanding to cover each and every corner of the market – including the morning cup o’ Joe.
